Chinese Independent Film Archive (CIFA)
CIFA is dedicated to the preservation of and access to Chinese-language independent film culture. It houses a large and rare collection of films, associated material culture, publications on Chinese-language independent cinema, and oral history video interviews with a diverse range of stakeholders in the field. The archive serves as an invaluable primary source for teaching and researching contemporary China, offering rich insights into the country’s culture, society and politics for both academic communities and the general public. Through regular screenings, exhibitions, symposia, academic publications, creative projects and educational initiatives, CIFA seeks to bridge academia, industry and the public, safeguard the legacy of Chinese-language independent cinema, and support its ongoing development.
CIFA was established with funding from the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Film Institute, and continues to operate with the support of Newcastle University, UK. Located in the Old Library Building (2.23) at Newcastle University, CIFA is open to students, researchers and the general public, on Mondays to Fridays, from 9:30am to 5:30pm.
