CIFF 9 was due to open in November 2012 in Nanjing. Screenings were planned to be hold in 7 standard screening rooms in 3 movie theatres. Asian Experimental Film and Video Art Forum in Nanjing (EXiN 2012) was also well prepared. Unfortunately the whole event was shut down 48 hours before the opening ceremony and CIFF suffered from related impact. In December, a small-scale award ceremony was held in Beijing Caihuoche Bar.

Awards and Comments
CIFF Highest Award ----Mystery
Handheld shooting, exquisite narrative, accurate capture of the local city, and skilled the guidance of performances are signatures of Lou Ye’s work and guarantee the quality of this film. Though this might not be the best of his work, this is definitely an interesting film.
CIFF Award of the Committee ----The Cremator
The plot is extremely compact, and the performance is relaxed and sober, creating a calm atmosphere that contrasts with the central conflict of the film. The film is in constant climax, with touching warmth hidden in the details. The cremator is not a prophecy, nor an homage to daily life. Rather, it points to the complexity of the contemporary and the fact that there is no one to depend on in the future. We are grateful that the director offered us a chance to witness this desperate story.
CIFF Best Debut Film----Four Ways to Die in My Hometown
Chai Chunya’s first film is a landmark in Chinese experimental film. Rather than opt for a counter-narrative approach, as in much contemporary video art, it is an extended narrative work. His experience in novels and non-fiction literature adds to his skill and novelty in telling stories, while his earlier training as a press-photographer is evident in the visual quality of the film.
